TV Scorecard - Cancellations and Renewals

TV Scorecard - Cancellations and Renewals

Its about that time of the year, new shows are being filmed to be shown to networks for pick-ups; and the networks are looking at their ratings and viewer intake, trying to figure out which shows the should keep, trash or start for the Fall Season of 2013.

This is my 2nd favorite time of the TV "Season" my first being actuallywatching the new season! I dont enjoy finales, at all. Cliffhangers on shows that wont end up coming back (ie 90210) annoy me to no end, and the idea of waiting another 3 or 4 months without the show is saddening (Vampire diaries!) Thankfully, summer TV shows come back, so Ill have something to watch (Rookie Blue and Falling Skies).

With Seasons coming to an end...it will become more clear. Networks have to provide their Renewal/Cancellation/Pilots in mid May. There is something to be said though about cancelled shows, sometimes they do come back, if the fan population and base is large enough, sometimes they can change a shows fate. (LipStick Jungle, The Killing, Unforgettable) But one thing is certain, Fans do not like a show to end without closure.

What Im dying to know is what shows will be picked up for new series, but once that comes out next week Ill post on it!

Ill update this section as I learn new information, but I will start with the Bubble News.

Bubble Shows- this is a show where the shows fate is undecided yet for a number of reasons, usually a network will wait on bubble shows to decide what they will be picking up from the pilots they are currently reviewing. If the networks like too many shows then they may cut other existing shows due to low ratings or costs. Shows like Terra Nova, where the production cost was high but the ratings were so-so, get cut for shows like Last Resort or Zero Hour. Problem is, the premise of those shows all sound good, but they too are expensive and hard to keep the audience going. With shows like LOST now over, people are not as interested (on network TV) in shows that continue to drag out without ever learning anything new and knowing whats really happening. Think 666 Park Ave. Shows that are too over the top and drawn out seem to end early these days. while there are exceptions to this rule (Once Upon A Time) the reality is, those exceptions use their time slot and genre to keep people tuned it. For instance, Once Upon A Time is on Sundays at 8pm. Its a fairy tale family drama, with a little bit of action. Perfect to watch with your kids before they go to bed, and its right after dinner on a SUNDAY. Essentially ABC plotted this one out pretty well. Doesnt mean it will stay, but its obviously well planned.

The Cleveland Show (Fox)

Cancelled/Ending- Based on this, Im thinking ABC and NBC have some work cut out for them this upcoming season... NBC with their comedy's and ABC with their dramas (which usually tend to be half and half)
