Shattered Secrets

Shattered Secrets by Krystal Wade - 3.5 STARS

Synopsis-After being kidnapped, hogtied, and stuffed in the trunk of a car, seventeen-year-old Abigail Nichols' boy problems seem unimportant.
She couldn't be more wrong.
The boy who saves her holds her heart.
But Derick Crawford also holds secrets.
Magical beings who guide human emotions are fighting an invisible war dating back to the dawn of time, and Abigail's one of them. The more she learns of her heritage, the less she wants to know. Armed with a very old, very massive book to teach them about their history, Abigail and Derick run away to a place where they think they can be safe and happy, only to have their troubles secretly hitch a ride.
Her history book is in a sharing mood, and it tells her to keep a secret of her own.
But has she put her trust in the wrong place?
And will the world survive if she has?

Overall-

Generally speaking I really liked this book. I enjoyed Abby and Derick's relationship. Dericks initial distance is explained quickly and yet its completely understandable (given the books' sci fi/paranormal element).  The idea of a parallel universe with other "beings" is nothing new (Sanctify and Mortal Instruments are only two examples) but I liked the authors writing style and the romantic aspects between Abby and Derick (can't say the same for Mortal Instruments! Yuck. As for Sanctify, thats just complicated but great story). Derick and Abby on the other hand seem like soul mates and I love that their connection remains throughout (no real love triangle) it seems that they are loyal to each other but not without their own tests and tribulations along the way.

This book has plenty of twists and turns as Abby finds out that nothing in her life is what it seems. This concept is present throughout the book, and is in fact something to keep in mind when reading. Nothing is as it seems.  This concept was actually really interesting. I found myself really falling in love with Abby and her need to love and protects those around her. Her character in particular was really well written.

The author definitely takes you for a ride in this book. I was sure the book was about to end on a cliff hanger more than once only to find out that there was MORE! and not just some extra scene, but each stopping point to me was just another turn to her! By the end of the book, I was on the edge of my seat. There is not major cliffhanger, but I get the impression that the fun has just begun. I frequently questioned whether each character was a good guy or bad guy and was always wondering what could happen next! It was an unpredictable adventure filled with questions, and romance. My kind of book. And it was quite the roller coaster.

I will definitely be reading the next one!

What I didn't Like-

What frustrated me the most in this book is that over the course of the book, the explanations make less and less sense. Its almost as if the explanations become more barren as the book became more confusing.
I also didn't like the disconnect between Abby and Derick which felt forced. Their relationship felt so natural and easy, and then all of the sudden it shifted, and the explanation felt forced.
